Acworth Resident Claude Johnson Receives Special Recognition
Now a tradition in the City of Acworth, the Acworth Achievers program recognizes a local resident for the contribution to the African America community during Black History Month. This years honoree was 76 year resident Claude Johnson. Mr. Johnson organized the first African American youth baseball team in Acworth in 1963 during the time where youth sports were still segregated.
His team stayed together and played other black teams until 1965 when youth sports were desegregated. Casually called “Acworth’s Biggest Fan,” Mr. Johnson received a proclamation from Mayor Allegood along with two baseball jerseys donated from the North Cobb High School baseball team.
I am a tenant at the Legacy at Walton Park for seniors 55 and above apartment homes. I would like to say thank you to the young ladies and the adult for being thoughtful enough to care enough about us and to give us a goody bag of sweet treats. May God bless all of you!!!!
